I'm ba-ack!

Hi everybody. I have been away since late last year. If you have read the older posts you will see that I was having a lot of medical problems. I think I have most of them fixed, finally, and feel like blogging for the first time in a long while.

So, on to the topic of today. I have been trolling through Youtube recently, and seen a lot of videos on craps betting systems. They all say something about  "How to win at craps" or words to that effect.

They are all bullshit and "Click bait", designed to get video views and subscribers (and eventually money) to the channel owners. They will all claim to have some kind of "never lose" system and then show a series of throws, bets and payoffs that some how "prove" that their system works. Don't believe it for a second.

Here is one that is typical of the whole bunch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn5z8Me_phE
It's called the "Iron Cross" betting method because the bets line up in a T shape, if you happen to be standing next to the stick man. iF you were standing on the ends of the table, I guess it could be called the L or "backward L" system.

I left a somewhat snarky comment. Here it is.

"Any and all craps betting "systems" will eventually fall victim to what statisticians call "regression to the mean". Yes, in the short term you will have deviations from the norm, but if you graph all rolls, eventually you will have a perfect bell curve, with six and eight in the middle and two and twelve on the ends. As with all forms of casino gambling, money management and exit strategy are key. Start with a specific fixed bankroll and don't chase losses. If you are winning, start rat-holing your chips and play with house money. In craps you want to place most of your money on bets that have the lowest house advantage. Pass line (or don't pass) with full odds, place the 6/8 and stay the fuck away from all the prop bets. The field is a long term loser for the player as well but it can be a nice way to hedge against a craps roll on the come out or if you are making a new Come bet."

As with all casino gambling, its all about the math, people. Money management and a good exit strategy are your only friends. Do not let some 2 bit hustler seeking  page views and subscribers entice you into anything foolish. The best way to play craps is to think of it as fun entertainment. Like going to see a movie or baseball game. Unlike going to a movie, however, you can sometimes walk away with more money than you started with. Sometimes a LOT more. But that's not going to happen every time and no one can guarantee it with a system.

If you really want to use gambling to earn money, you should be playing single deck blackjack. And counting cards. And tracking Aces. And masking your play. More on that next time.

What's the surveillance room like? Repost

This is a repost of a post I made about a year ago, but I feel like it bares s repeating. Enjoy. I got another good question last week, from a reader wanting to know what a surveillance room is like, how it is laid out and how it is staffed and run.  So here goes. I have worked in surveillance departments at six different casinos in the last 25 years. Some very small (300 slots, 6 blackjack tables) and some very big (3000 slots, 60-70 table games of all kinds). When I started in the early 90's it was all VCRs and not all cameras were recorded all the time. We used a lot of "multi-plexers" and "quad screens". A multi-plexer used one VCR to display and record up to 16 screens on one monitor. Since the VCR still records at 30 frames per second, that meant that if you did a review on any one of those 16 screens you would be looking at a "freeze frame" effect, where you only got 1.8 frames per second of the shot you were looking at. A quad would record

Advantage play is not cheating. Repost

This is a reprint of a previous post on advantage play. Before I begin, I want to remind you about my Patreon page. If you enjoy my content, and would like to see more of it more often, please consider becoming a patron. Click here to go to my page. Whenever I meet people and tell them what my profession has been for the last 25 years, I always come away with the feeling that they equate card counting and advantage play as cheating. It is not, of course, as most of the readers of this blog undoubtedly know. It is just against the policy of most casinos to allow it. As a legally licensed, privately owned business located on private property, all casinos have the right to refuse service to anyone, for any reason they choose. Most of the time, card counting, or ace/shuffle tracking, or anything else that casino management considers "advantage play" wont even get you thrown out, just politely asked to not play blackjack anymore. Management would love to have you go play slots
