what does dealer cheating at Blackjack look like?

So last month I posted about some questions that I get from people when they find out what my job is. This is the follow-up to that post and it’s mostly going to be about what cheating from the inside, or cheating by the dealer, would look like if it was going on. The easiest way for a dealer to cheat, on the player’s behalf, would be simply to dump the game. Dumping the game is when you pay the player for a losing hand or overpay the player on a winning hand. If you’re in surveillance and you happen to see this happen oh, the best thing you can do is keep quiet at least for a moment or two and see if it continues. It’s possible that the dealer just made a mistake and paid a losing Hand by mistake. If you continue to watch you’ll see if he’s doing it on a regular basis and if so if he’s doing it to a specific player. This would indicate collusion, or a conspiracy between the player and one or more players to do so. It’s always best to have plenty of information and evidence before movi...

Cheating at Baccarat

I've been noticing a lot of stories in the news recemtly about cheating (in casinos) at the game of baccarat. I guess this is as good a time as any to tell you what I know about the subject. Which turns out to be quite a lot. If you are reading this blog, you probably already know how Baccarat is played. For those of you who don't, I suggest going to The Wizard of Odds website ( click here) to read their excellent primer. They explain how the game is played, and some of its quirks and intricacies, much better then I could here, and with a lot less typing on my part. So if you're not already familiar with how the game is played, go and read that now, then come back. Now on to the cheating. Unlike cheating at other card games in the casino, every case that I know of that involves baccarat cheating, is a conspiracy of two or more persons, at least one of whom is on the inside (a casino employee). The somewhat recent Phil Ivey case is an exception that we will discuss at a l...

Slot machine hacking

One of my followers on Twitter, Eddie "Mastersnake" DeSoto (@corvetteflex)  wants to know if there's any way that a slot machine can be made to pay off more often from a remote location, AKA hacking it. Here's what I know. First of all, I know of no documented case in the United States where that is happened. I have heard about it happening in Europe, particularly Eastern Europe. But first, a little background. There are two types of slot machines being used currently, 1 used all over the world and the other only found in North American casinos. The first type is a stand-alone slot machine like you would find in Nevada, or anywhere in the world that there's a corporate-owned casino. What designates them as 'stand alone" is that they have a random number generator chip embedded on their motherboard, and every time you press the spin or play button that RNG provides a number which corresponds with a game result. Everything that happens on the screen, the ...

Casino news: Arizona Mazatzal Casino Heist

Two Employees Charged with Armed Robbery at Their Own Casino Now in Federal Custody Cort Smith 3 days ago Two Mazatzal Casino workers in Arizona who moved in on the cage of their own employers on July 17 shortly after midnight, brandishing firearms and shooting multiple rounds, are now in federal custody. Miraculously, no one was hurt in the attack. The two men alleged to be involved were tracked down and arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Of the $650,000 taken, according to federal court records, some $480,000 has now been recovered, with no word on the status of the remaining dough. FBI agents arrested 31-year-old Ryan Pearson and 32-year old Armando Ochoa this week for their alleged roles in the robbery. Officials say the pair fired several rounds from their weapons as they tried to intimidate casino employees — their own co-workers — into handing over cash. Both men have been charged with Hobbs Act Robbery and Use of a Weapon in a Crime of Violence. “Hobb...

Advantage play is not cheating. Repost

This is a reprint of a previous post on advantage play. Before I begin, I want to remind you about my Patreon page. If you enjoy my content, and would like to see more of it more often, please consider becoming a patron. Click here to go to my page. Whenever I meet people and tell them what my profession has been for the last 25 years, I always come away with the feeling that they equate card counting and advantage play as cheating. It is not, of course, as most of the readers of this blog undoubtedly know. It is just against the policy of most casinos to allow it. As a legally licensed, privately owned business located on private property, all casinos have the right to refuse service to anyone, for any reason they choose. Most of the time, card counting, or ace/shuffle tracking, or anything else that casino management considers "advantage play" wont even get you thrown out, just politely asked to not play blackjack anymore. Management would love to have you go play slots...

52 Factorial!

I just watched an interesting video on YouTube about the total numbers of ways that you can rearrange a deck of 52 cards. It's very interesting video, without going overboard on the math, basically it says that if you had started shuffling at the beginning of time and shuffled a new deck randomly every second, you would still not have duplicated any shuffle (or deck combinations) in 13.8 billion years. think about that the next time you go play video poker. Watch the video by clicking here .  And click here to visit my Patreon page. If you enjoy my content, and would like to see more of it more often, please consider becoming a patron. I am also looking at expanding into audio and video podcasts if I can get enough donations.

It's a fun little town about 3,000 people, kind of in the middle of nowhere. Anyway I'll be posting new content very soon. In the meantime I am happy to announce that we have our first sponsorship deal. It is a benefits and frequent buyer program called Zoombenefits. They offer discounts on cell phone service and other stuff too. And you stuff is being added all the time. To check out the sponsorship deal text my code, CAR6673, to 385-213-3225. I'm ba-ack!

Hi everybody. I have been away since late last year. If you have read the older posts you will see that I was having a lot of medical problems. I think I have most of them fixed, finally, and feel like blogging for the first time in a long while. So, on to the topic of today. I have been trolling through Youtube recently, and seen a lot of videos on craps betting systems. They all say something about  "How to win at craps" or words to that effect. They are all bullshit and "Click bait", designed to get video views and subscribers (and eventually money) to the channel owners. They will all claim to have some kind of "never lose" system and then show a series of throws, bets and payoffs that some how "prove" that their system works. Don't believe it for a second. Here is one that is typical of the whole bunch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn5z8Me_phE It's called the "Iron Cross" betting method because the bets line up in...

First show in the bag!

Today I had my first Casino confidential show on KCKQ 1180am in Reno Nevada. I will put a link to the FTP site where you can download it if you'd like to listen to it. Okay so maybe I'm not the most professional and Polished radio talk show host you've ever heard, but at least I'm trying. Bill Zender was an excellent first guest. He is a very professional and Polished speaker and knows more about casinos than most people have ever learned. Be sure and check out his website at www.BillZender.com to find out what he's up to, purchase some of his books, or see his YouTube videos. On a sad note, no-one called in to win our free giveaway prize. We were giving away range passes to Reno Guns and Range, located on Market Street in Reno Nevada right behind the Harley-Davidson dealership. Their phone number is 775-826-2626. We will try again next week to give away a couple of free passes. Are phone number for the giveaway is toll free 844-790 8255. Call Ian next Tuesday f...

So what is a surveillance room like, anyway? (intro)

I got another good question last week, from a reader wanting to know what a surveillance room is like, how it is laid out and how it is staffed and run.  So here goes. I have worked in surveillance departments at six different casinos in the last 25 years. Some very small (300 slots, 6 blackjack tables) and some very big (3000 slots, 60-70 table games of all kinds). When I started in the early 90's it was all VCRs and not all cameras were recorded all the time. We used a lot of "multi-plexers" and "quad screens". A multi-plexer used one VCR to display and record up to 16 screens on one monitor. Since the VCR still records at 30 frames per second, that meant that if you did a review on any one of those 16 screens you would be looking at a "freeze frame" effect, where you only got 1.8 frames per second of the shot you were looking at. A quad would record all four screens at 30 fps, but the size of the picture on the screen was 1/4 (obviously) of the to...
