Blackjack update and show preview

Hi everyone. I've been sick so I haven't posted in a while. I have been feeling a little better the last couple of days so I will post a gambling update and a show preview for tomorrow Tuesday August 22nd.

Remember Casino Confidential airs live in the Reno area at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays on 1180 AM KCKQ radio. You can also listen to it stream over the internet at americamatters.us or on the TuneIn Radio app.

So tonight, Monday, I went to my favorite low limit blackjack tables, at an unnamed Casino in the city of Sparks. I played at a $3 minimum, single deck table, bought in for $50 and left with $20. Oh well, you can't win every time.

I mostly flat bet $5 a hand, lost my first few hands and never got up at all. I was able to play for almost an hour on that $50. I never got into a high positive count or Ace rich deck where I felt like I could confidently increase my bet, so I didn't.

I did  had a situation where I felt like varying from basic strategy involving a pair of sevens against a dealers ten. Basic strategy for the single deck game, says that you should split sevens all the way up to and including a 7 for a dealer up card. That I understand and fully agree with. Where I disagree with basic strategy is what you do against an 8, 9, 10 or Ace for an up card.

Basic says to hit versus an 8, 9, or Ace up but stand when the dealer has a ten up. You are in a real bad situation here any way you slice it. Two 7's vs a dealer's 10 is just a really bad hand. The fact that it is two sevens really doesn't matter to me, I just look at it as a hard 14 which you are obviously always going to hit against the 10 up.

So I did hit, and busted. The dealer ended up having a 10 in the hole so I would have lost either way. But it made me think about it the number of difficult to remember decisions that you need to make to master basic strategy.

So that's what we're going to talk about on tomorrow show. The most common mis- played hands by the average player, and the hands that are difficult to remember when you're trying to memorize basic strategy.

So tune in tomorrow on 1180am at 4 p.m. for Casino Confidential.

What's the surveillance room like? Repost

This is a repost of a post I made about a year ago, but I feel like it bares s repeating. Enjoy. I got another good question last week, from a reader wanting to know what a surveillance room is like, how it is laid out and how it is staffed and run.  So here goes. I have worked in surveillance departments at six different casinos in the last 25 years. Some very small (300 slots, 6 blackjack tables) and some very big (3000 slots, 60-70 table games of all kinds). When I started in the early 90's it was all VCRs and not all cameras were recorded all the time. We used a lot of "multi-plexers" and "quad screens". A multi-plexer used one VCR to display and record up to 16 screens on one monitor. Since the VCR still records at 30 frames per second, that meant that if you did a review on any one of those 16 screens you would be looking at a "freeze frame" effect, where you only got 1.8 frames per second of the shot you were looking at. A quad would record ...

Some off you  might even invest in individual stocks or a mutual fund in a private brokerage account.  So let me ask you what you would do if you got a hot tip from a friend about a tech stock, a "highly volatile" tech stock, that was poised to go through the roof. Maybe they're about to release a new app, and there are rumors that Google is going to buy them out. Maybe you've squirreled away some "mad money...

Reader question.

OK well, I'm back to posting after about a 6 month. I absence. Sorry I was in and out of the hospital with a bunch of problems, but I'm all better now So i noticed that during my abs. Since I got a few questions from readers, I would like to answer one of them now. So the question is, how much money should you take with you to the casino? the answer is of course, if depends. If you happen to be one of the lucky people who live in a jurisdiction where legalize cambling is allowed. And it's a place that you go to to have fun or relax, Or just have some excitement in your life, then that will be a different amount that you will want to take with you as opposed to someone who is making a trip to Vegas that they make only once a year. And if you live Nevada, like I do and you go into casinos all the time, then that will be a different answer as well. As a general rule of thumb. I don't walk into a casino. Unless I have a $100 that I am willing to lose. If you don...
