There really is only one house advantage in blackjack

There. I said it. I'm sure I'll get a lot of angry response or emails, but there really is only one advantage that the house has over the player in blackjack. Do you know what it is?

The house plays last.

In a full Blackjack game with seven players at the table and one dealer the cards are dealt in the play moves clockwise from first base to third base. To be correct, I should say that it's clockwise from the Dealer's perspective. At any rate, once every player receives there two cards and the dealer has his two cards, with one of them face-up, then every player in turn makes his hit or stand decisions. It will start with the player on the dealers left and proceed clockwise to the player on the dealers right.

Then the dealer plays last. If he busts, it only makes a winner out of  everyone left with bets on the layout. Prior to that, as play went around the table, if a player had busted he lost immediately (and the dealer immediately took his money). If the dealer goes on to bust on that same hand, the player who busted doesn't get his money back, he's already lost it. That's why I say that the dealers advantage, and the only real house advantage, is that they get to play last.

Think about it. The dealer makes his hit/stand decisions based on a set of rules. (Usually, they must always hit if their total is under 16, and they must always hit on a soft 17. And they always stand on  a hard17 or higher.) If you as a player, are using basic strategy, and you should be, then you are also making your hit and stand decisions on a set of rules, also.

So you're both using a set of rules to play, and your rules are actually better for you than the dealers are. You get to double down, or split pairs, or surrender, if it's offered in the joint you're playing at. The dealer gets to do none of those things. So you actually have better rules and better playing conditions than the dealer does. Also, if you get a blackjack you get paid at 3 to 2, an increase of 50%. If the dealer gets Blackjack he doesn't get to take an extra 50% of your money.

If it wasn't for the dealer playing last the house wouldn't have any advantage in blackjack at all. And obviously a casino is not going to offer a game to customers that they don't have an advantage at.

So that's why I say that the dealers only advantage, is that they get to play last.

What's the surveillance room like? Repost

This is a repost of a post I made about a year ago, but I feel like it bares s repeating. Enjoy. I got another good question last week, from a reader wanting to know what a surveillance room is like, how it is laid out and how it is staffed and run.  So here goes. I have worked in surveillance departments at six different casinos in the last 25 years. Some very small (300 slots, 6 blackjack tables) and some very big (3000 slots, 60-70 table games of all kinds). When I started in the early 90's it was all VCRs and not all cameras were recorded all the time. We used a lot of "multi-plexers" and "quad screens". A multi-plexer used one VCR to display and record up to 16 screens on one monitor. Since the VCR still records at 30 frames per second, that meant that if you did a review on any one of those 16 screens you would be looking at a "freeze frame" effect, where you only got 1.8 frames per second of the shot you were looking at. A quad would record ...

Some off you  might even invest in individual stocks or a mutual fund in a private brokerage account.  So let me ask you what you would do if you got a hot tip from a friend about a tech stock, a "highly volatile" tech stock, that was poised to go through the roof. Maybe they're about to release a new app, and there are rumors that Google is going to buy them out. Maybe you've squirreled away some "mad money...

Reader question.

OK well, I'm back to posting after about a 6 month. I absence. Sorry I was in and out of the hospital with a bunch of problems, but I'm all better now So i noticed that during my abs. Since I got a few questions from readers, I would like to answer one of them now. So the question is, how much money should you take with you to the casino? the answer is of course, if depends. If you happen to be one of the lucky people who live in a jurisdiction where legalize cambling is allowed. And it's a place that you go to to have fun or relax, Or just have some excitement in your life, then that will be a different amount that you will want to take with you as opposed to someone who is making a trip to Vegas that they make only once a year. And if you live Nevada, like I do and you go into casinos all the time, then that will be a different answer as well. As a general rule of thumb. I don't walk into a casino. Unless I have a $100 that I am willing to lose. If you don...
